President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni received H.E. Huang Xia, the United Nations Special Envoy of the Secretary-General for the Great Lakes Region, for a courtesy call at State House in Entebbe. This meeting allowed both leaders to address pressing regional concerns and prepare for an upcoming high-level summit.

During their discussions, President Museveni and the UN Special Envoy concentrated on several key issues affecting the Great Lakes region, with particular emphasis on the ongoing situation in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). The DRC has long been a central focal point of regional instability, making its challenges a priority for leaders striving to promote peace and cooperation in the area.

Another important topic on the agenda was the forthcoming Regional Oversight Mechanism (ROM) summit, a crucial platform for addressing matters of regional security and development. President Museveni reaffirmed Uganda’s commitment to hosting the summit, which is scheduled for May 2025, with the specific date to be confirmed later. The ROM summit serves as an essential forum for dialogue among Great Lakes leaders, aiming to confront shared challenges and foster stability.

The previous ROM summit, hosted by President Évariste Ndayishimiye of Burundi, who currently chairs the mechanism, laid the groundwork for continued discussions. The upcoming gathering in Uganda is expected to expand on those discussions, addressing a wide range of issues vital to the region’s future.

President Museveni’s agreement to host the summit highlights Uganda’s active role in regional diplomacy and its commitment to advancing peace and collaboration across the Great Lakes. As preparations progress, the event is anticipated to attract significant attention from regional stakeholders and international observers alike.
